EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Peter Brown for his "New Illustrations of Zoology" published by B. White in London in 1776, showcases two intriguing birds of the Asian subcontinent: the Lesser Coucal (Centropus bengalensis) and the Asian Emerald Cuckoo (Chrysococcyx maculatus), also known as the Lark-heeled Cuckoo and Spotted Cuckoo, respectively. The Lesser Coucal, depicted at the top of the image, is a small, slender bird with a glossy, blue-black plumage and a distinctive white stripe over its eye. Its bill is short and decurved, and its legs are long and lark-like, giving it an unusual appearance. This bird is a resident of wetlands and open country across South Asia, and is known for its distinctive call, which sounds like the quacking of a duck. Below the Lesser Coucal is the Asian Emerald Cuckoo, which is easily distinguished by its bright, iridescent green plumage and distinctive white spots on its wings. This cuckoo is a brood parasite, meaning that it lays its eggs in the nests of other birds, relying on the hosts to raise its young. The Asian Emerald Cuckoo is found across South and Southeast Asia, and is a common sight in open woodlands and gardens. Both of these birds are important components of the rich avian diversity of the Asian subcontinent, and their inclusion in Peter Brown's "New Illustrations of Zoology" reflects the growing interest in natural history during the 18th century. This beautiful engraving not only showcases the birds' striking appearances, but also provides an important record of their appearance for future generations.
