EDITORS COMMENTS
Marie Touchet, Daughter of an Apothecary, Mistress to King Charles IX of France (1549-1638) This portrait depicts Marie Touchet, a woman of humble beginnings who rose to become the mistress of the powerful King Charles IX of France. Born in 1549, Marie was the daughter of an apothecary, a common profession in 16th century France. Her elegance and charm, however, belied her humble origins. In this stunning handcoloured copperplate engraving by Georges Jacques Gatine, after an illustration by Louis Marie Lante from the Galerie Francaise de Femmes Celebres, Marie is shown wearing the fashionable attire of the time. She dons a bonnet atop a chaperon, a ruff collar, and a velvet brocade dress with impressive shoulder pads. The dress is layered over an embroidered petticoat, adding to its opulence. Marie Touchet's rise to prominence began when she caught the eye of King Charles IX at a ball in 1572. Despite her lower social status, the king was enamoured with her beauty and wit, and the two began a passionate affair. Marie became the king's official mistress, living in the royal court and enjoying a life of luxury and privilege. Despite the scandal caused by their relationship, Marie remained the king's constant companion until his death in 1574. Her story is a testament to the power of charm and beauty to transcend social boundaries and capture the hearts of the powerful. This exquisite engraving serves as a reminder of the allure and intrigue of the French court during the Renaissance era.
