EDITORS COMMENTS
In this intriguing and captivating hand-colored copperplate engraving, we find the busts of three renowned ancient Greek figures: Militiades the Younger, Themistocles, and Pyrrhus I. Militiades, depicted on the far left, was a distinguished Athenian general and statesman who played a pivotal role in the defeat of the Persians at the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC. Themistocles, represented in the middle, was a brilliant Athenian politician and naval strategist, renowned for his role in the defeat of the Persian invasion fleet at the Battle of Salamis in 480 BC. Pyrrhus I, the King of Epirus, is shown on the right. Pyrrhus was a formidable warrior and a significant adversary for the Roman Republic during the Pyrrhic War (275-272 BC). This engraving, taken from Giulio Ferrario's "Il Costume Antico e Moderno," showcases the ancient and modern costumes of the peoples of the world. The busts of Militiades, Themistocles, and Pyrrhus are surrounded by various motifs and symbols. A mural with a kidnapped bull and a nymph can be seen in the background, possibly representing the mythological story of the abduction of Europa by Zeus in the form of a bull. A cameo with the images of Cupids and Nereids adorns the frame, adding an element of romance and beauty to the engraving. The base of the engraving features various symbols, including a nasoni (a public drinking fountain), a family crest, and a brandenburg treasury. The inscriptions "Milziade," "Temistocle," and "Pyrrhus" are inscribed below their respective busts, making it clear who each figure represents. This engraving is a testament to the rich history and cultural heritage of ancient Greece and Rome, providing a glimpse into the lives of some of the most influential figures of the time.
