EDITORS COMMENTS
Monimia rotundifolia, also known as Monimia di foglie rotonde or wintergreen, is depicted in this stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was engraved by Corsi, under the direction of the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840). Turpin is considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century, known for his meticulous attention to detail and ability to capture the true essence of his subjects. Monimia rotundifolia is a small shrub native to North and South America, bearing round, glossy leaves and white or pink flowers. The plant is also commonly referred to as monimia, pyrola, or pyrole, and its leaves and fruit are edible and have been used for medicinal purposes. The plant's fruit, which is shown in the illustration, resembles a small, red berry. The history of Monimia rotundifolia goes back to the early naturalists, including Jussieu, who was a prominent figure in the field of botany during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. His Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali was a comprehensive work that aimed to document the natural world, and the inclusion of Monimia rotundifolia in the publication reflects its importance in the study of botany during that time. This beautiful engraving showcases the intricate details of Monimia rotundifolia's leaves, flowers, and fruit, providing a glimpse into the natural beauty of this fascinating plant. The use of hand-coloring adds an additional layer of depth and vibrancy to the illustration, making it a true work of art that continues to captivate viewers even today.
