EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts a vibrant assembly of four North American bird species: a male Pine Grosbeak (Pinicola enucleator), two female Red Crossbills (Loxia curvirostra), and two male White-winged Crossbills (Loxia leucoptera). The image, an ornithological illustration by John James Audubon, was originally published in Benjamin Harry Warren's Report on the Birds of Pennsylvania in 1890 by E.K. Mayers in Harrisburg. The Pine Grosbeak, with its striking red crest and yellow underparts, is perched on a snow-laden pine branch, its beak filled with pine seeds. The two Red Crossbills, with their distinctive curved beaks, are shown feeding on conifer cones, while the White-winged Crossbills, with their black and white wings, are also seen consuming seeds from a nearby tree. This print, a combination of lithography, engraving, and chromolithography, transports us back to the 19th century when natural history was a burgeoning field of scientific inquiry. The intricate details of the birds' plumage and their lifelike poses are a testament to the skill and artistry of the time. The scene is further enriched by the inclusion of other birds, such as the Magnolia Warbler (Setophaga magnolia), the Worm-eating Warbler (Helmitheros vermivorum), the Pine Siskin (Spinus pinus), and the Snow Bunting (Plectrophenax nivalis). The colorful array of birds and their winter surroundings create a beautiful and intriguing tableau, offering a glimpse into the rich avian diversity of North America over a century ago.
