EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait depicts Marcus Didius Severus Julianus Augustus, also known as Roman Emperor Didius Julianus, who ruled Rome from April to June in the year 193 AD. Julianus was born into a noble family and held various high-ranking positions within the Roman government before his unexpected ascension to the throne. His reign was brief, marked by political instability and power struggles, as he succeeded Pescennius Niger, who had challenged Emperor Septimius Severus for the imperial throne. The portrait, created as a copperplate engraving in the late 17th century by Abraham Bogaerts for the publication "De Roomsche Monarchy" (The Roman Monarchy) by Francois Salma, offers a striking representation of the emperor's regal bearing and sophisticated appearance. Julianus is shown wearing the traditional Roman imperial attire, including a toga and a diadem adorned with pearls and precious stones. His expression conveys a sense of determination and resilience, reflecting the challenges he faced during his short reign. The copperplate engraving process, a popular method for producing high-quality prints during the 17th century, allowed for intricate details and lifelike representations, making this portrait a valuable historical document and an essential addition to any collection focusing on Roman history, classical art, or the Caesars and Kaisers of antiquity.
