EDITORS COMMENTS
The Propylaea, an ancient gateway and monumental entrance to the sacred precinct of the Acropolis in Athens, Greece, is depicted in this exquisitely hand-colored copperplate engraving by Giovanni Antonio Sasso. This image is taken from the 1826 publication "Il Costume Antico e Moderno" by Giulio Ferrario. The Propylaea is a masterpiece of ancient Greek architecture, featuring Doric columns and intricate architrave decorations. At right, the Temple of Athena Nike, dedicated to the goddess of victory, can be seen. To the left, the building with the paintings of the renowned Greek painter Polignotus, known as the I Propilei or the Propylaea of the Peoples, is depicted. The Roman Agora and the Forum of Atene, or the Market of Atene, can be glimpsed in the background. The Propylaea was originally built in the late 5th century BC and served as the main entrance to the Acropolis until the 17th century. This engraving provides a fascinating glimpse into the rich history and cultural heritage of ancient Greece, showcasing its architectural grandeur and artistic achievements.
