EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph depicts two distinctive North American bird species: the Red-breasted Nuthatch (Sitta canadensis) and the Purple Martin (Progne subis). The Red-breasted Nuthatch, represented by the male bird on the left, is a small, agile bird with a distinctive red breast, black cap, and white eyestripe. Known for their long, curved bills and ability to climb down tree trunks headfirst, they are often found in coniferous forests. The Purple Martins, shown as a male and a female, are large, swallow-like birds with iridescent purple and green plumage. They are not true martins, but rather members of the swallow family. The male, with his long, pointed wings and forked tail, is easily identified by his vibrant colors. The female, while less colorful, shares similar physical characteristics. This stunning illustration is a chromolithograph, a printing process that uses multiple lithographic stones, each for a different color. It was created from an ornithological drawing by the renowned naturalist John James Audubon and published in Benjamin Harry Warren's Report on the Birds of Pennsylvania in 1890. The intricate details and vivid colors showcase the beauty and diversity of these birds, making this a valuable addition to any ornithological collection.
