EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving by Antonio Verico, taken from Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World," published in Florence in 1844, offers a fascinating glimpse into the Imperial Army of the Holy Roman Empire during the 19th century. The image depicts a lively scene at Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, where Sappers, Miners, and Engineers are shown at work during the summer residence of the Habsburg rulers. In the foreground, Sappers, or military engineers, are seen busy at work constructing a bridge or fortification, using picks, shovels, and other tools. Their uniforms, adorned with brass buttons and red epaulets, reflect their military status. Nearby, Miners are shown laboriously extracting ore from the earth, their faces smeared with grime, and their sturdy leather aprons protecting their clothing. Engineers, dressed in more formal attire, are engaged in planning and overseeing the construction projects, their maps and instruments at the ready. The engraving, titled "Vista del Palazzo di Schoenbrun," was created during the reign of Emperor Ferdinand I, who ruled from 1835 to 1848. The image captures the industrious spirit of the Imperial Army, demonstrating the essential role of Sappers, Miners, and Engineers in maintaining the military might and infrastructure of the Habsburg Empire. The intricate detail and vibrant colors of the engraving make it a valuable historical document and an attractive addition to any collection of 19th-century military or fashion history.
