EDITORS COMMENTS
In this 14th-century scene, a siren, a mythical creature with the upper body of a woman and the lower body of a fish, skillfully seduces a merman knight. The siren, dressed in a richly decorated German women's costume, wears a voluminous, ermine-lined cape, adorned with intricate embroidery and a wicker corset. Her hair cascades down her back in loose waves, and she holds out a delicate fan, inviting the merman knight closer. The merman knight, dressed in full armor, dons a great helm with a vizored bascinet, a suit of plate armor, and a coat of arms emblazoned with the crest of the Frosch-Weikhard family. The knight's grave effigy, complete with a shield bearing the St. Catherine's church emblem, lies nearby, a stark reminder of the potential consequences of the siren's allure. This intriguing tableau is taken from a painted wood and leather box in a cabinet of curiosities, a collection of unusual objects meant to inspire wonder and fascination. The image is a chromolithograph, a color printing technique popular during the late 19th century, created by Dr. Jakob Heinrich von Hefner-Alteneck and lithographed by Proebes. Hefner-Alteneck, a German museum curator, archaeologist, art historian, illustrator, and etcher, meticulously researched and documented the costumes, artworks, and appliances from the Middle Ages to the 17th century. This enchanting illustration showcases the fusion of mythology, fashion, and chivalry during the 14th century.
