EDITORS COMMENTS
This copperplate stipple engraving, titled "Ittiosauro commune, Plesiosauro dolicodeiro," is a remarkable illustration of the skeletons of two extinct dinosaurs, the Ichthyosaurus communis and the Plesiosaurus dolichodeirus, from the Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Sciences, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was drawn by Jean Gabriel Pretre and directed by Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, a renowned French botanical illustrator of the 19th century. The Ichthyosaurus, meaning "fish lizard," is depicted on the left side of the print, with its long, torpedo-shaped body and four flipper-like limbs. Its skeletal structure reveals the adaptation of this marine reptile for swimming in the ancient oceans. The Plesiosaurus, meaning "near sailor," is shown on the right side of the print, with its elongated neck and four limbs, two of which are shown in a paddling motion. This illustration provides a fascinating glimpse into the prehistoric world and the evolution of marine reptiles. The background of the print features a variety of plants, including moss, false fern, Cyathophorum bulbosum, Leskea pennata, Hookeria plee, and other vegetation. The plants add a touch of natural beauty and contrast to the skeletal remains of the dinosaurs. The intricately detailed engraving, hand-coloured in vibrant hues, showcases the exceptional skill and artistry of the illustrators and engravers of the time. This historic print, a testament to the scientific discoveries of the 19th century, offers a captivating glimpse into the world of extinct marine reptiles and the natural world of the past.
