EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored copperplate engraving, taken from the esteemed Encyclopedia of Natural History: Fish by the renowned Bavarian clergyman and naturalist, Gottlieb Tobias Wilhelm (1758-1811), showcases two fascinating marine creatures: the Snipefish (Macroramphosus scolopax 52) and the Grooved Razorfish (Centriscus scutatus 53). The Snipefish, also known as the Longsnout Snipefish, is depicted with an elongated snout and a slender body. Its scales are small and its coloration is a silvery-gray, with a darker back. The Snipefish is a pelagic fish, found in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, and is characterized by its long, protrusible snout, which it uses to locate prey in the deep waters where it resides. The Grooved Razorfish, on the other hand, is a small, laterally compressed fish with a distinct pattern of grooves along its body. Its coloration is a silver-gray with a darker back and a lighter belly. The Grooved Razorfish is a common inhabitant of the Indo-Pacific region and is known for its ability to burrow into the sandy ocean floor using its pectoral fins. Wilhelm's meticulous attention to detail is evident in this stunning engraving, which captures the unique features of both the Snipefish and the Grooved Razorfish with remarkable accuracy. The handcoloring adds an additional layer of beauty and realism to the image, making it a true masterpiece of ichthyological illustration from the early 19th century.
