EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the beautiful Trochetia triflora, also known as the false fiddleleaf, hydrolea spinosa, or idrolea triflora. The illustration is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's "Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali," or Dictionary of Natural Sciences, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The meticulous illustration was drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840). Turpin is considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century, known for his exceptional attention to detail and ability to capture the intricacies of various plant species. The engraving process used to create this image involved the application of a stylus to a copper plate, creating tiny dots that were then filled in with color. The Trochetia triflora is a large, evergreen shrub or small tree that is native to tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas. Its leaves are large, ovate, and lobed, resembling those of a fiddle, hence the common name "false fiddleleaf." The plant produces clusters of fragrant, white flowers, which bloom in the summer and fall. This exquisite illustration provides a fascinating glimpse into the botanical world of the 19th century, offering a detailed and accurate record of the Trochetia triflora for scientific study and appreciation. The intricate details captured in this engraving serve as a testament to the skill and artistry of Turpin and the importance of botanical illustration in the history of science and botany.
