This lithograph by Karl Joseph Brodtmann, published in Heinrich Rudolf Schinz's Illustrated Natural History of Men and Animals in 1836, showcases three endangered mammals: the Least Weasel (Mustela nivalis), Red Panda (Ailurus fulgens), and Bearcat (Arctictis binturong). The tiny Least Weasel, the smallest carnivore in the world, is depicted in the foreground, its agile body and bushy tail contrasting against the snowy backdrop. Once widespread across the northern hemisphere, this elusive creature is now considered vulnerable due to habitat loss and fragmentation. In the middle ground, the Red Panda (Ailurus fulgens) is depicted with its distinctive red fur and bushy tail, curled around a tree trunk. This charming arboreal mammal is native to the eastern Himalayas and southwestern China, and is currently listed as vulnerable due to habitat loss and fragmentation, as well as poaching for its fur.
