EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a historic moment in British royal history as King George V, Queen Mary, and the Duchess of York (future Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother) descend the steps of the Royal Yacht Victoria and Albert and make their arrival at Cowes Week in 1933. The annual sailing regatta, held in the English town of Cowes on the Isle of Wight, has been a beloved tradition since the late 18th century and is renowned for attracting the most distinguished guests. King George V, dressed in a formal suit and hat, leads the way down the boat's ladder, followed by his wife, Queen Mary, in an elegant dress and hat adorned with a feather. The Duchess of York, later known as Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, can be seen behind her mother, wearing a stylish hat and coat. The Duke of York, later King George VI, is visible on the left with his back facing the camera. The 1930s, also known as the 30s or the Thirties, were a significant period in British history, and this photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the British royals during this era. The future King George VI, who would ascend to the throne in 1936 following his brother's abdication, is also present in this image, adding to its historical significance.
