EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured lithograph depicts Queen Elizabeth I of England, dressed in attire representative of her reign from 1558 to 1603. The portrait, attributed to Stubbs and Stow, was created around 1840 and published by Dickinson & Son in London. Elizabeth I is shown wearing a high lace ruff and cuffs, which were fashionable accessories during her time. The intricately designed ruff, made of fine lace, frames her face and neck, enhancing her regal appearance. The cuffs, adorned with lace and pearls, add elegance to her sleeves. The queen's bodice is elaborately jeweled, with intricate patterns and precious stones embellishing the fabric. The bodice is cinched at the waist with a belt, accentuating her slender figure. Her headdress, also adorned with jewels, completes her regal attire. Queen Elizabeth I is known for her iconic fashion sense, which combined elements of Tudor and Renaissance styles. Her clothing was often richly decorated with jewels, velvet, and lace, reflecting her wealth and power. This portrait, captured at Henham, provides a glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the Elizabethan era. Miss Agnes Strickland, a prominent historian and author, described this portrait and others in her book "Pictures and Prints," published in 1843. The image is a testament to the enduring fascination with the style and elegance of Queen Elizabeth I, who remains an iconic figure in English history.
