EDITORS COMMENTS
In this image from the 1930s, a little girl intently focuses on her task as she learns the intricate art of making pillow lace from her grandmother in the quaint village of Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire, England. The pillow lace industry was a thriving cottage industry in this area, with many residents, particularly women and children, contributing to the production of these delicate textiles from their own homes. The girl sits at a small table, her hands deftly maneuvering the lace bobbins, while her grandmother looks on approvingly, guiding her through the complex process. The table is adorned with various tools and materials, including a pillow stuffed with straw or sand to provide support for the lace-making. The room is filled with the warm glow of natural light, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Pillow lace making was a labor-intensive and time-consuming craft, requiring great patience and skill. The lace was made by wrapping and twisting threads around bobbins, then passing them over the pillow to create intricate patterns. The finished lace was then washed, starched, and pressed to give it a crisp and elegant appearance. The pillow lace industry in Great Missenden was an important source of income for many families, particularly during times of economic hardship. The lace was sold to merchants who would then distribute it to retailers and consumers both in the UK and abroad. Despite the decline of the industry in the latter half of the 20th century, the tradition of pillow lace making continues to be preserved and celebrated in Great Missenden, with many local residents still practicing this beautiful and intricate craft. This heartwarming image captures the essence of intergenerational learning and the importance of preserving traditional crafts and skills.
