EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative image, a 20th-century HMV 78rpm gramophone record, encased in a buff-coloured paper sleeve, takes center stage. The record, bearing the title "Be British and Stand to Your Post," is a poignant reminder of a bygone era. Accompanying the record is a magnificent 20-inch brass To Life Boats sign, its arrow pointing decisively in the direction of safety. The HMV gramophone records, introduced in the late 19th century, revolutionized the way music was consumed, bringing the joy of sound into homes around the world. The record in this photograph, with its patriotic title, likely hails from the United Kingdom, where the HMV company had its origins. The To Life Boats sign, a symbol of maritime safety, adds an intriguing layer to this scene. Lifeboats were an essential component of ocean liners, providing a vital means of escape in times of distress. The sign, with its bold, brass construction, would have once adorned the deck of a ship, directing passengers to the lifeboats in a calm and authoritative manner. Formerly the property of Brian Ticehurst, a renowned Titanic expert, this duo offers a glimpse into the rich history of transportation and travel. The record and sign, though seemingly unrelated, serve as a poignant reminder of the interconnectedness of music, safety, and the sea. This photograph, with its intriguing combination of a 78rpm record and a brass To Life Boats sign, invites us to ponder the stories they might hold and the memories they might evoke. The record's paper sleeve, worn and faded, speaks of countless plays and the passage of time, while the sign's unyielding brass gleams with the promise of safety and survival. Together, they transport us to a time when music and maritime safety were inextricably linked, and the world was a little smaller.
