EDITORS COMMENTS
"This evocative photograph captures the enchanting scene of a performance of William Shakespeare's timeless tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, in Colombo, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), during the late 19th century. The image transports us back in time to an era when the captivating story of the star-crossed lovers was brought to life on the stage for an eager audience. The photograph offers a glimpse into the rich cultural melting pot of Colombo, with the audience dressed in their finest attire, reflecting the diverse influences that shaped the region. The orchestra, composed of local musicians, adds to the atmosphere, their instruments poised and ready to accompany the actors. At the heart of the scene, Friar Laurence, played by a Singhalese actor, can be seen delivering a solemn blessing to the young couple, Romeo and Juliet, as they prepare for their final moments together. The tension and emotion of the scene are palpable, with the audience hanging on every word. The staging of Shakespeare's play in Colombo during the 19th century is a testament to the enduring appeal of his works, transcending cultural and geographical boundaries. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the power of theatre to bring people together, to provoke thought, and to transport us to another time and place."
