EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage lantern slide depicts the dramatic moment of the Battlecruiser Derfflinger's sinking in Scapa Flow at 2.45pm on 21st June 1919. The German navy ship, a prominent figure in World War I, is seen here surrendering and ultimately meeting its demise. The Battle of Jutland, fought on 31st May 1916, was the largest naval battle of the war and the Derfflinger played a significant role. Following Germany's defeat, the fleet was ordered to intern itself in Scapa Flow, Orkney Islands, Scotland. However, on 21st June 1919, in a final act of defiance, the German sailors scuttled their ships to prevent them from falling into British hands. The Derfflinger, along with seven other battleships and three cruisers, was raised and scrapped in the 1920s. This photograph captures a poignant and historic moment in naval warfare during the Victorian and Edwardian eras. The Keasbury-Gordon Photograph Archive Collection, from Mary Evans Prints Online, offers a glimpse into the past, providing valuable insights into the events and people that shaped our world history.
