EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Hermeswiese Settlement in Vienna, Austria, built in the 1920s as a pioneering example of social housing and garden city design. The settlement, a collaborative effort between the municipality of Vienna, the cooperative "Altmannsdorf-Hetzendorf," and architect Karl Ehn, was constructed between 1923 and 1924. The residents played an active role in the project, contributing at least 1,000 unpaid, voluntary working hours. The settlement, a testament to the social and architectural innovations of the era, was designed to provide affordable housing and a sense of community for its inhabitants. Ehn's architectural plans incorporated green spaces, communal gardens, and a strong emphasis on natural light and airflow. The settlement's design was influenced by the garden city movement, which sought to combine the benefits of urban living with the advantages of rural life. The cooperative nature of the project allowed for a sense of ownership and pride among the residents, who worked together to build their homes and community. The settlement's unique architectural style, with its clean lines, natural materials, and attention to detail, reflects the modernist aesthetic of the time. This photograph, taken circa 1925, captures the settlement in its early days, with the lush greenery and well-tended gardens already flourishing. The Hermeswiese Settlement remains an important part of Vienna's architectural and social history, a testament to the vision and determination of its creators and residents.
