EDITORS COMMENTS
1. The Sedlec Ossuary: A Unique Testament to Mortality in the Heart of the Czech Republic The Sedlec Ossuary, located in the suburb of Sedlec near Kutna Hora in the Czech Republic, is an extraordinary and thought-provoking testament to the cycle of life and death. This small Roman Catholic chapel, nestled beneath the Cemetery Church of All Saints and part of the former Sedlec Abbey, dates back to the 14th century. During the 16th century, the Sedlec Ossuary gained unique distinction when the bones of more than 40,000 people were exhumed from the Hradschin Cemetery and carefully arranged within its walls. The bones were brought to Sedlec following the Black Death epidemic, as a means to create a memorial and decorate the chapel's interior. The result is a breathtaking and intriguing display of human skulls and bones, meticulously arranged in various patterns and designs. The most famous of these arrangements is the "bone chandelier," which features six large pendants, each containing at least one complete skull, and numerous other bones intricately woven together. The Sedlec Ossuary, also known as the "Bone Church" or "Kostnice v Sedlci," is a striking reminder of the impermanence of life and the human fascination with death. The ossuary has been a popular tourist attraction since the late 19th century, and its unique beauty continues to draw visitors from around the world. This photo print, taken in the 1920s, captures the awe-inspiring atmosphere of the Sedlec Ossuary, offering a glimpse into the past and a reminder of the enduring allure of this remarkable and intriguing site.
