EDITORS COMMENTS
This postcard depicts the Tomb of William Harvey, a renowned physician and scientist, located in St. Andrew's Church in Hempstead, Essex, England. Harvey is best known for his groundbreaking discovery of the circulation of blood through the body's systemic system. Born in 1578 in Folkestone, Kent, Harvey studied at the University of Padua in Italy before returning to England to practice medicine. In 1616, he published his seminal work, "Exercitatio Anatomica de Motu Cordis," which described the circulation of blood through the heart and the body's veins, arteries, and capillaries. The tomb, donated by the Royal Society of London, is a marble monument that honors Harvey's significant contributions to the medical field. The inscription on the tomb reads, "Here lies the body of William Harvey, Doctor of Physic, who was born at Folkestone in Kent, and was educated at the University of Padua. He was Physician in Ordinary to King James I and to King Charles I. He discovered the Circulation of the Blood, and published his Discoveries in the Year 1616. He died in the Year 1657, Aged 78." Harvey's discovery of the circulation of blood was a major breakthrough in medical history, as it challenged the prevailing belief that blood was static and only moved due to the action of the heart pumping it. His work laid the foundation for the modern study of the cardiovascular system and revolutionized the field of medicine. The tomb of this great physician and scientist continues to stand as a testament to his enduring legacy in the world of medicine.
