EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph, published by Heinrich Keller in 1889, showcases a gathering of noblemen from the late 17th century in the presence of King Louis XIV of France. The Sun King, depicted in the center, is portrayed in an oil painting on alabaster, a rare and valuable medium for the time, which was created in Heidelberg. Surrounding the monarch are French cavaliers from the reign of Louis XIV, all dressed in the opulent and elaborate fashions of the era. Dr. Jakob Heinrich von Hefner-Alteneck, a renowned German curator, archaeologist, art historian, illustrator, and etcher, was responsible for the meticulous illustration of this historical scene. The intricate details of the noblemen's attire, from their velvet doublets and lace collars to their ornate swords and decorative hats, are a testament to the extravagance and grandeur of the period. The chromolithograph, which is a type of print made using multiple lithographic stones, each coated with a different color, offers a vivid and detailed representation of the noblemen's costumes, artworks, and appliances from the Middle Ages to the 18th century. This artwork not only serves as a visual record of the fashion and history of the time but also as a reminder of the opulence and grandeur that characterized the reign of King Louis XIV of France.
