EDITORS COMMENTS
Borley Rectory, a notoriously haunted house in Essex, England, was the subject of intense investigation and intrigue during the late 1920s and 1930s. This set of notes, dated between 1929 and 1939, provides a fascinating insight into the strange happenings reported at the rectory, which was believed to be haunted by the ghost of a medieval nun named Marianne. The rectory, located in the small village of Borley, had a long history of unexplained phenomena, including apparitions, strange noises, and mysterious messages. These notes, which appear to have been compiled from various sources, include descriptions of the Marianne messages that were allegedly received by mediums during séances held at the rectory. One message, written in a shaky hand, reads, "Marianne, the lady in white, will come to you. She will be dressed in white and will have long, flowing hair. She will speak to you of her love for a man named Hugh." Another message, written in a more confident hand, states, "Marianne is not a malevolent spirit. She is a lonely soul who longs for companionship and understanding." The notes also include tracings of what are believed to be the handwriting of the ghost. These tracings, which were made during séances, show a distinct and unusual handwriting style, with loops and curls that are not typical of human handwriting. Despite numerous investigations and attempts to debunk the hauntings, Borley Rectory continued to be a source of mystery and intrigue. The notes and tracings provide a unique glimpse into the beliefs and experiences of those who believed in the reality of the hauntings, and serve as a reminder of the enduring fascination with the paranormal in the early 20th century.
