Edo XOSE-1 75214

Edo XOSE-1 75214 at Patuxent River Naval Air Station on the scrap dump. The Edo Aircraft Corporation was an established company that produced seaplane floats. In 1946, Edo designed its first aircraft, the Edo OSE. Two prototype aircraft (designated XOSE-1) were built and flown in 1946. The XOSE-1 was a single-seat low-wing cantilever monoplane with a single float and fixed wing-tip stabilizing floats. The wings could be folded for shipboard storage. The aircraft was designed for a variety of roles including observation and anti-submarine patrols. Unusually, it was designed to carry a rescue cell on the underwing hard-points, which would be capable of carrying a single person when used for air-sea rescue. Eight production aircraft (designated XOSE-1) were built to a United States Navy order but none were accepted into service. A two-seat training conversion was carried out as the XTE-1, but production TE-2 aircraft were cancelled. Date: circa 1950

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the forlorn figure of an Edo XOSE-1 (75214) at Patuxent River Naval Air Station, circa 1950. The Edo Aircraft Corporation, an established company renowned for producing seaplane floats, designed and built the XOSE-1 in 1946 as their first aircraft. This innovative single-seat, low-wing cantilever monoplane boasted a single float and fixed wing-tip stabilizing floats, with foldable wings for shipboard storage. The XOSE-1 was versatile, engineered for roles including observation and anti-submarine patrols. Uniquely, it was designed to carry a rescue cell on underwing hard-points, capable of saving a single person during air-sea rescue missions. Despite the promising design, only eight production XOSE-1 aircraft were built to a United States Navy order. Regrettably, none were accepted into service. A two-seat training conversion, the XTE-1, ensued but the production TE-2 aircraft were ultimately cancelled. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the XOSE-1's unrealized potential in the realm of naval aviation during the 1950s.
