EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph from April 17, 1930, a group of intrepid aviators from the Heston Park Flying Club embarked on a 3,000-mile holiday tour across the skies of Europe. Among the twenty aircraft taking off from Heston Air Park (Aerodrome) were several women pilots, breaking gender barriers in the world of aviation. From left to right, we see Mrs. Chalmers, Mrs. Spencer Cleaver (nee Pollock), Sir Sefton Brancker, Miss Norman, and Miss Leathart. Mrs. Spencer Cleaver, born Adelaide Franklin Pollock in 1885, was an accomplished aviator and the first woman to fly solo across the English Channel. Sir Sefton Brancker, a pioneering figure in British aviation, was the founder of the Heston Park Flying Club and a former RAF officer. Miss Norman was the daughter of Sir Henry Norman, a prominent businessman and philanthropist, and Miss Leathart was a female aviator who, like her fellow women in the photo, defied societal expectations and proved that women were just as capable as men in the cockpit. This groundbreaking tour marked a significant moment in the history of aviation, showcasing the determination, skill, and courage of its female members. The Heston Park Flying Club's 3,000-mile holiday tour by air was a testament to the pioneering spirit of its members and their commitment to pushing the boundaries of what was possible in the early days of flight. This photograph is part of The Peter Butt Aviation Collection, held by Mary Evans Picture Library. It captures a moment in time when the skies were still a new frontier, and the courage and determination of these women pilots paved the way for future generations of aviators.
