EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning illustration of Picus viridus, the Green Woodpecker, is taken from John and Elizabeth Gould's "M.S. Notes for Birds of Europe, Insessores," Volume 2, published between 1832 and 1837. The meticulously detailed plate, facing page 22, showcases the distinctive features of this intriguing bird. The Green Woodpecker's crest, a fan-like arrangement of feathers on its head, is raised proudly, adding to its regal appearance. Its cap, a patch of red feathers, contrasts sharply with the grey and green plumage covering the rest of its body. The annotated illustration highlights the anatomy of the bird, drawing attention to its distinctive mask, which is a patch of white feathers around its eyes, and its long, red, chisel-like bill. John Gould, a renowned English publisher and printmaker, and his wife Elizabeth, an accomplished artist and illustrator, collaborated on this magnificent work. Their collaboration resulted in some of the most exquisite and accurate bird illustrations of the 19th century. The Goulds' attention to detail and commitment to scientific accuracy are evident in this illustration of the Green Woodpecker. The Green Woodpecker, a member of the Piciformes order and the Picidae family, is a common bird found in Europe. Its distinctive call, a loud "laughing" sound, can often be heard in wooded areas. The bird's anatomy, with its strong, powerful beak and cheek muscles, is perfectly adapted for foraging for insects and larvae in trees. This illustration is a testament to the Goulds' artistic and scientific achievements during the 19th century and remains an invaluable resource for ornithologists and natural history enthusiasts today.
