EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, taken from Jean Gabriel Pretre's illustrations in Frederic Cuvier's Dictionary of Natural Science, Mammals, published in Paris, France, in 1816, showcases three fascinating and endangered mammals: the Pink Fairy Armadillo (Chlamyphorus truncatus), the Pygmy Anteater (Cyclopes didactylus), and the Sunda Pangolin (Manis javanica). The Pink Fairy Armadillo, also known as the Chinchil, is a small armadillo species native to South America. With its unique pinkish-gray color and delicate appearance, it is one of the smallest and most elusive armadillos, measuring only about 12 cm (5 inches) in length. The Pink Fairy Armadillo is a burrowing animal, spending most of its life underground, and feeds primarily on ants and termites. The Pygmy Anteater, or Silky Anteater, is a tiny anteater species native to Central and South America. It is the smallest anteater in the world, measuring only about 25 cm (10 inches) in length. The Pygmy Anteater is an excellent climber and spends most of its life in trees, using its long, sticky tongue to extract insects from tree bark. The Sunda Pangolin, also known as the Javan Pangolin, is a critically endangered mammal native to Southeast Asia. It is a small, elongated, and scaly mammal, covered in keratin scales that provide protection against predators. The Sunda Pangolin is an insectivore, feeding primarily on ants and termites, and is also known for its ability to roll into a tight ball when threatened, making it difficult for predators to attack. This beautiful and intricately detailed engraving not only captures the unique features of these three fascinating mammals but also provides a glimpse into the natural history of the 19th century. The use of handcoloring adds an additional layer of beauty and depth to the illustration, making it a true work of art.
