EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "Uniting for Better Working Conditions: The Poor Law Workers Union Badge, 1919" This photograph showcases an enamel badge, a cherished symbol of solidarity and unity among its bearers. The badge is that of the Poor Law Workers Union, an influential trade union established in the United Kingdom in 1918, later changing its name to the Poor Law Officer's Union in 1922. The union was formed to represent the interests of the employees working in the country's workhouses, institutions designed to provide relief and assistance to the poor and destitute. The workers faced challenging conditions, including long hours, low wages, and a lack of job security. The Poor Law Workers Union aimed to improve their working conditions and secure better wages and benefits for its members. The circular badge, circa 1919, features a shield at its center, emblazoned with the Union's emblem – a pair of hands holding a torch and a plow, symbolizing the union's commitment to both labor and enlightenment. The inscription around the shield reads, "Poor Law Workers Union," reflecting the union's dedication to advocating for the rights and welfare of its members. The enamel badge, worn proudly by union members, served as a visible sign of their commitment to the collective cause. It not only represented their unity but also served as a powerful reminder of their shared goals and the importance of standing together to effect change. This evocative image offers a glimpse into the rich history of labor movements in the UK and the enduring power of unity and solidarity among workers in their pursuit of better wages, working conditions, and social justice.
