Known for his significant role in the complex relationship between the Church and Napoleon Bonaparte, Pius VII is depicted here in regal attire, adorned with the papal tiara and robes. Born on December 15, 1740, in Concesio, Italy, Pius VII began his ecclesiastical career in 1753, eventually becoming Pope in 1800. However, their alliance did not last long. In 1809, Napoleon invaded Rome, and Pius VII was taken prisoner and exiled to Savona, France, for nearly five years. Upon his release in 1814, Pius VII returned to Rome and was welcomed with great enthusiasm by the people.
