EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite watercolor drawing, titled "Porphyrio albus" or Lord Howe Swamphen, is a stunning representation of a unique and intriguing bird species native to the Lord Howe Island in the Tasman Sea, Australia. The illustration is part of The Raper Collection, created by the English naturalist George Raper between 1768 and 1797. Raper was an accomplished artist and naturalist who traveled extensively throughout the Pacific, documenting the flora and fauna he encountered. The Lord Howe Swamphen, also known as the Bald Gallinule, is a flightless bird belonging to the order Sauropsida, class Aves, and family Rallidae. It is easily identified by its distinctive bald, red head and forehead, long, red legs, and a long, downward-curved beak. The Swamphen is a member of the Gruiformes order, which includes cranes, rails, and other wading birds. The Swamphen was hunted extensively for food and feathers, leading to its decline and eventual extinction on Lord Howe Island in the late 19th century. Today, conservation efforts have helped reintroduce this bird to its native habitat, and it is now a protected species. This illustration provides a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of Lord Howe Island and the unique bird species that once inhabited it. The intricate details of the Swamphen's anatomy, captured in Raper's skilled hand, offer a window into the natural world of the 18th century. The Swamphen's bald head and red forehead, which were once considered strange and unusual, are now recognized as distinctive features that make this bird a beloved and cherished part of the natural history of Australia.
