EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 93: Porphyrio porphyrio poliocephalus, the Purple Swamphen, depicted in this stunning 18th century painting by Pieter Cornelis de Bevere from the Loten Collection of Coloured Drawings of Birds, Mammals, Insects & Plants. The Purple Swamphen, also known as the Blue Swamp Hen or the African Purple Gallinule, is a large, distinctive bird belonging to the Rallidae family, order Gruiformes, and class Sauropsida. This avian species is native to Africa, and can be found in wetlands and marshy areas. The Purple Swamphen in this illustration is shown in vibrant detail, with its iridescent blue-purple plumage, long, red legs, and distinctive red forehead. Its large, decurved beak is also clearly visible, which it uses for both foraging and defense. The intricate anatomy of the bird's body is expertly rendered, revealing the delicate structures of its feathers and the subtle textures of its skin. Pieter Cornelis de Bevere, the artist behind this masterpiece, was a renowned Dutch naturalist and painter. He was born in Antwerp in 1710 and studied under the renowned painter Jan van Huchtenier. De Bevere's work was highly sought after for its meticulous attention to detail and accurate representation of the natural world. This illustration was produced during the height of the Enlightenment, a period of great scientific discovery and exploration. The Loten Collection, which includes this painting, was compiled by Joan Gideon Loten, a Dutch physician and naturalist, who was also an avid collector of natural history specimens. The collection was one of the most comprehensive of its kind in Europe at the time, and was a valuable resource for scientific research and education. The Purple Swamphen continues to be an intriguing and beautiful species, and this illustration remains an enduring testament to the artistry and scientific curiosity of the 18th century.
