EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures Prince Louis of Battenberg, also known as Louis Alexander of Battenberg, in the prime of his naval career around 1912. At this time, he had succeeded Sir Francis Bridgeman as the First Sea Lord of the Admiralty, a position he held until his resignation in 1914. Prince Louis was born in 1854 in Austria, but his family was of German origin and held the title of Prince and Marquess of Battenberg and Mountbatten. He married Princess Victoria of Hesse and by Rhine, the eldest daughter of Queen Victoria, in 1884, making him the grandfather of the current Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. The image shows Prince Louis in his full admiral's uniform, with a stern expression and piercing gaze. The backdrop of the photograph is the picturesque harbor of Milford Haven, Wales, where the Royal Navy had a significant presence. The photograph is a testament to Prince Louis's impressive naval career and his crucial role in the British Royal Navy during a pivotal period in history. Prince Louis's tenure as First Sea Lord was marked by modernization efforts in the navy, including the introduction of new technologies and the expansion of the fleet. However, his German heritage became a source of controversy during World War I, leading to his resignation in 1914. Despite this, his legacy as a respected naval leader remains significant, and this photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into his life and achievements.
