EDITORS COMMENTS
In this elegant and poised portrait, Princess Augusta Wilhelmina Louisa of Hesse-Kassel, Duchess of Cambridge (1797-1889), is depicted in her advanced years, yet her regal bearing and dignified expression betray no signs of age. The Duchess was the longest-lived daughter-in-law of King George III, having married his tenth-born child, Prince Adolphus, Duke of Cambridge, in 1818. Born on 25 July 1797 in Kassel, Germany, Princess Augusta was the seventh daughter and seventh child of Landgrave Frederick V of Hesse-Kassel and Princess Caroline of Denmark. Her marriage to Prince Adolphus, who was 18 years her senior, was a strategically important one, as it strengthened the ties between the British and German royal families. The Duchess's signature, elegantly inscribed below the portrait, attests to its authenticity and adds an intriguing personal touch. The portrait, which dates from the 1880s, captures the essence of a woman of great dignity and grace, who lived through an era of significant historical change. Princess Augusta was the maternal grandmother of Mary of Teck, who would later become Queen Consort of George V in 1910. Her younger daughter, Princess Mary Adelaide of Cambridge, later became the Duchess of Teck. The Duchess's lineage is thus an essential link in the genealogy of the current British monarchy. This evocative portrait offers a glimpse into the life of a remarkable woman, who played a significant role in the complex web of European royal history. The Duchess's age, as evidenced by the wrinkles around her eyes and the silver threads in her hair, only adds to her allure, as she remains a testament to the enduring power of the human spirit.
