EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving depicts two elusive and vulnerable aquatic mammals of Europe: the Russian Desman, Desmana moschata, and the Eastern Mole, Scalopus aquaticus. The image is taken from Frederic Cuvier's Dictionary of Natural Science: Mammals, published in Paris, France, in 1816. The illustration was created by the skilled painter of natural history, Jean Gabriel Pretre, and expertly engraved by Massard, under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin. Pretre, a native of France, began his career as a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later became the artist to the Museum of Natural History. The Russian Desman, also known as the European Water-shrew, is a semi-aquatic mammal found in the wetlands of Eastern Europe. With its distinctive long, flat snout and webbed feet, it is well adapted to its aquatic environment. The species is currently listed as vulnerable due to habitat loss and fragmentation. The Eastern Mole, on the other hand, is a terrestrial mammal that is rarely seen due to its subterranean lifestyle. It is found in Eastern Europe and Asia, and is characterized by its short, powerful limbs and long, sticky claws, which allow it to dig intricate burrow systems. The species is not currently considered threatened, but its population trends are not well known. This beautiful engraving not only showcases the natural history of these fascinating creatures but also highlights the artistic skills of the time. It is a testament to the dedication of naturalists and artists who worked tirelessly to document and preserve the natural world for future generations.
