EDITORS COMMENTS
Step back in time with this image from Mary Evans Prints Online, showcasing two elegant Princess line dresses from the year 1878. The first dress, more practical for active pursuits, boasts a shorter length and striped fabric, making it an ideal choice for women engaging in leisurely seaside activities such as walking. The dress features lacing down the central back seam, allowing for a customized fit, and buttoned panels at the sides for easy access. The second dress, with its regal air, showcases the latest fashion trends of the era. The stand-up collar, a popular feature of the Polonaise style, adds an air of sophistication, while the lacing down the central back seam and buttoned panels at the sides provide a flattering fit. The train, a luxurious addition, adds to the grandeur of the dress, making it a fitting attire for special occasions. Women of the late 19th century donned these dresses while enjoying the seaside, often accompanied by bonnets to protect their complexions from the sun. The machine-made fabrics and intricate details, such as the lacing and buttoning, reflect the advancements in textile technology during this period. This photograph offers a glimpse into the rich history of fashion and the role it played in the lives of women during the late 1800s. The contrast between the practical and the ornate showcases the versatility of fashion and the importance of comfort and style in the lives of women, even during a time when fashion was often dictated by societal norms and expectations.
