Born on March 12, 1801, Maule was raised in Scotland and entered Parliament in 1826 as the representative for Haddingtonshire. His political career flourished under the Whig Party, and he held various positions of power, including Postmaster General and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. In 1855, Maule's political prowess was recognized when he was appointed as the Minister of War in the Palmerston Ministry. During his tenure, he played a crucial role in the Crimean War, overseeing the military efforts against Russia. His leadership was marked by a commitment to modernizing the British military, including the implementation of new tactics and the establishment of the War Office. Despite his successes, Maule's tenure as Minister of War was not without controversy.
