EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative portrait captures the enigmatic and intellectual presence of the renowned Ukrainian-born musician, Sergei Prokofiev, on the occasion of the first performance of his iconic ballet, "Romeo and Juliet," in England. The image, published in The Illustrated London News on January 15, 1938, encapsulates the essence of a pivotal moment in Prokofiev's career. Born in Ukraine in 1891, Prokofiev was a virtuoso pianist, a groundbreaking composer, and a dynamic conductor. His innovative and experimental approach to music challenged the established norms of the classical world, making him a figure of both admiration and controversy. As the curtain rose on the first performance of "Romeo and Juliet" at the Queen's Hall in London, Prokofiev, dressed in a formal suit and tie, sat in the wings, eagerly anticipating the response of the British audience. The ballet, which premiered in Brussels in 1935, was a modern retelling of Shakespeare's tragic love story, featuring Prokofiev's distinctive blend of dissonance and melody. The Illustrated London News, a leading weekly publication, captured this historic moment with this striking portrait. The photograph, taken against a plain backdrop, allows Prokofiev's intense gaze and expressive features to take center stage. The image not only serves as a testament to Prokofiev's artistic brilliance but also to the enduring power of music to transcend borders and captivate audiences.
