EDITORS COMMENTS
In this illustration from a 1697 edition of Charles Perrault's classic fairy tale, Puss in Boots challenges the Rich Magician to turn himself into a mouse. With a confident strut and a pointed hat tilted at a rakish angle, Puss taunts the magician with his wand, daring him to prove his magical prowess. The magician, with a look of determination and a flourish of his wand, attempts to transform into a mouse. But this is no ordinary mouse - it is a part of Puss's cunning trick. As the magician morphs into a tiny rodent, Puss, with a swift and calculated move, snatches him up in his paw. The silhouetted image of the magician's shocked face, with his gold-trimmed robe and wand, contrasts starkly with the tiny, terrified mouse in Puss's grasp. This historical illustration, created in the 1950s by ILN (Illustrated London News), captures the essence of the 1690s fairy tale's mischievous and trickster spirit. The image, with its intricate details and rich colors, transports us back in time to an era of enchantment and wonder. And as we ponder the cleverness of Puss's trickery, we can't help but smile at the thought of this timeless tale's enduring charm.
