EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph, titled "SNAPDRAGON: Mama presides over the snapdragon bowl while the children snatch the raisins from the burning brandy and try to eat them before they stop flaming," is a captivating glimpse into a cherished Christmas tradition of the past. Dating back to the late 19th century, circa 1890, this image transports us back in time to an era when families gathered around the hearth to partake in the festive and fun-filled snapdragon game. The central figure in the photograph is the mother, who presides over the snapdragon bowl with a watchful and amused expression. The bowl, filled with raisins soaked in brandy, is set atop a red-hot iron stand, surrounded by a ring of burning brandy. The children, dressed in their Sunday best, eagerly reach into the bowl, attempting to snatch the plump raisins before they are engulfed by the flames once again. The contrast between the warmth of the family's togetherness and the danger of the fiery bowl creates an intriguing and thrilling atmosphere. The snapdragon game, a popular Christmas custom, originated in medieval Europe and was believed to ward off evil spirits. The game's name comes from the belief that the snapping or crackling of the brandy as it burned was the sound of the devil being driven away. This photograph not only captures the excitement and joy of the children as they play the game but also highlights the importance of family and tradition during the holiday season. This historical image, from the extensive collection of Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a fascinating insight into the past and serves as a reminder of the enduring nature of cherished family traditions.
