EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken circa 1850, offers a glimpse into the past of St. Paul's Cathedral in London as it appeared before the extensive redevelopment of Ludgate Hill. The image reveals a striking contrast between the historic beauty of Wren's magnificent cathedral design and the bustling shops that largely hide its front facade. During this period, the front of St. Paul's Cathedral was almost entirely obscured by the shops and buildings that lined Ludgate Hill. The architectural masterpiece, designed by Sir Christopher Wren after the Great Fire of London in 1666, was intended to be a grand and awe-inspiring sight for visitors. However, the shops and buildings that encroached upon the cathedral's grounds prevented Wren's design from achieving its full effect. This photograph, taken over a century before the major redevelopment of Ludgate Hill in the late 1890s, provides a valuable historical record of the relationship between St. Paul's Cathedral and the surrounding urban landscape. The image transports us back in time, allowing us to imagine the scene as it may have looked during the Victorian era. Despite the shops and buildings that obstruct the view, the intricacies of Wren's design can still be discerned, with the iconic dome and tall spires peeking out from behind the structures. This photograph serves as a reminder of the rich history of St. Paul's Cathedral and the ever-evolving nature of the city of London.
