EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts a Suffragette W.S.P.U (Women's Social and Political Union) programme for a Women's Demonstration held at the prestigious Royal Albert Hall on 28th March 1912. The programme, printed in striking purple with a green pencil and attached with a green ribbon, highlights the prominent speakers of the event, including Annie Kenney, Evelyn Sharp, Israel Zangwill, and Elizabeth Robins. The resolution printed inside the programme strongly condemns the policy of the Government for their efforts to destroy the ongoing agitation for women's suffrage. The militant window-smashing campaign that began in early March 1912 led to the arrest of Emmeline Pankhurst, Emmeline Pethick-Lawrence, and Frederick Pethick-Lawrence on charges of conspiracy. These arrests and the subsequent trial at the Old Bailey were a result of the escalating militant tactics employed by the Suffragettes in their quest for women's enfranchisement. This historical artefact is a poignant reminder of the determination and resilience of the Suffragette movement, which played a significant role in securing women's right to vote in the United Kingdom. The use of purple and green, the colours of the Suffragette movement, adds to the authenticity and visual appeal of this rare and intriguing piece of history.
