EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "A Timeless Tradition: The Ritual of Throwing Salt Shoulder-wards" This photograph, hailing from the 1960s, depicts a woman in a quaint café or restaurant, her expression a mixture of surprise and amusement. The scene is set in an era when such quirky superstitions held a significant place in everyday life. The woman in the image has inadvertently spilled a generous pinch of salt from the shaker, scattering it across the red-checkered tablecloth. In response, she raises her right hand, scoops up a handful of the errant grains, and with a swift motion, hurls them over her left shoulder. This age-old ritual, deeply rooted in folklore, is believed to ward off bad luck that may have befallen her upon the salt's unfortunate spill. The salt shaker, a common fixture in most dining establishments, has been a part of our culinary history for centuries. This superstition, known as "throwing salt over the left shoulder," dates back to ancient Rome, where it was believed that the devil, who was often depicted as being left-handed, would attempt to steal the spilled salt. To prevent this, Romans would throw the salt over their left shoulder, ensuring that the devil would not be able to reach them. This charming snapshot, reminiscent of a bygone era, serves as a reminder of the rich tapestry of traditions and folklore that continue to influence our lives, even as we move forward into the modern world.
