Tiberius, a member of the Julio-Claudian dynasty, was adopted by his great-uncle and first Roman Emperor, Augustus, who named him his successor. Born in 42 BC, Tiberius began his political career under the patronage of Sextus Pompey, the son of the famous pirate and rival of Octavian (later known as Augustus). However, after Octavian's victory in the civil war, Tiberius joined him, and they formed an alliance that would lead to Tiberius' eventual adoption and succession.
