EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Union Workhouse in Hailsham, Sussex, as it appeared in the early 20th century. Built between 1835 and 1836 on what is now Hawks Road at Upper Horsebridge, the workhouse was a product of the English Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834. The image depicts a horse and cart making its way down the lane leading to the workhouse entrance, a common sight during the Victorian and Edwardian eras when the workhouse system was in full force. The Union Workhouse in Hailsham was designed to provide shelter, food, and work for the destitute, the elderly, and the infirm. Those who were able-bodied were expected to work in the workhouse in exchange for their keep. The workhouse system, which originated in the 16th century, was intended to be a deterrent to poverty and a means of reducing the burden on parish rates. The photograph, taken in 1908, offers a glimpse into a bygone era. The workhouse, with its imposing gates and high walls, stands as a reminder of the harsh realities of poverty in Victorian and Edwardian England. The horse and cart, a common mode of transportation at the time, add to the sense of history and nostalgia. Today, the site of the Union Workhouse in Hailsham is largely unrecognizable. The buildings have been demolished, and the area has been redeveloped. However, the history of the workhouse and the stories of those who lived and worked there continue to be an important part of Sussex's rich historical legacy.
