EDITORS COMMENTS
This copperplate engraving, created by John Lee after a drawing by T. Webster, showcases a harmonious assembly of four exquisite musical instruments: the Viol d'Amour (1), Mandore (2), Spanish Guitar (3), and Lute (4). Dating back to the early 19th century, this engraving was originally published in Abraham Rees' Cyclopedia or Universal Dictionary of Arts, Sciences and Literature, published by Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme and Brown in London in 1820. The Viol d'Amour (1), positioned at the center, is a unique and intricately designed instrument, characterized by its heart-shaped body and delicate strings. Its name, meaning "violin of love," is a testament to its romantic and expressive nature. To the left, the Mandore (2) is depicted with its pear-shaped body and six strings. This instrument, which originated in Italy, was popular during the Baroque period for its sweet and mellow tone. The Spanish Guitar (3), positioned at the bottom, is a traditional Spanish instrument with six strings and a flat-topped body. Its rich, resonant sound and intricate fingerwork make it a staple in Spanish music. Lastly, the Lute (4) is shown on the right, with its characteristic pear-shaped body and long neck. This ancient instrument, which dates back to the Middle Ages, was widely used during the Renaissance period for its versatile and melodic sound. This engraving offers a glimpse into the past, providing a visual representation of the various musical instruments that have shaped the history of music. The intricate details and stunning craftsmanship showcase the artistry and skill of the engraver and the illustrator, making this a truly captivating work of art.
