EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative WWI poster, produced by the Imperial Maritime League between 1914 and 1918, is a powerful reminder of the emotional and patriotic appeal made to British women and girls during the First World War. The poster, titled "Keep the Flag Flying," features a red, white, and blue Union Jack being held aloft by the hands of several women and girls. The caption below the image reads, "Persuading British Women and British Girls not to condone the behaviour of men who do not enlist." The image is an emotive and emotional appeal to shame those men who were not doing their part by enlisting in the military. The use of the Union Jack, a symbol of British national pride, adds to the sense of patriotism and honor being invoked. The poster's message is clear: by not enlisting, men were bringing dishonor not only to themselves but to their families and their country. The Imperial Maritime League, a British organization that supported the Royal Navy during the war, used posters like this one to mobilize public opinion and encourage enlistment. The poster's use of persuasive language and emotional imagery reflects the intense patriotic fervor of the time and the urgent need for manpower to fight in the war. The poster's design is simple yet effective, with the Union Jack taking center stage and the women and girls forming a line to support it. The use of the phrase "Keep the Flag Flying" adds to the sense of urgency and the call to action. The poster is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the war and the role that women and girls played in supporting the war effort.
