EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant postcard captures the moment of solemn reverence as Field Marshal Lord Plumer unveils the Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres, Belgium, on July 24, 1927. The Menin Gate, an archway in the eastern entrance of the historic city walls, was built to honor the British and Commonwealth soldiers who were killed in the First World War and whose graves are not known. The memorial bears the names of over 54,000 soldiers, inscribed on its walls. The ceremony was attended by thousands of people, including veterans, local residents, and dignitaries. Lord Plumer, a highly decorated British military leader who had commanded the British Second Army during the Third Battle of Ypres in 1917, delivered a moving speech, paying tribute to the sacrifices made by the soldiers and expressing hope for peace and unity. The unveiling of the Menin Gate Memorial was a significant moment in the history of the town of Ypres, which had been devastated by the war. The archway was designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield and Sir Herbert Baker, and its construction had taken several years. The memorial was also the site of the Last Post Ceremony, which has been held every evening since August 24, 1928, as a tribute to the fallen soldiers. This postcard is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the First World War and the enduring legacy of the Menin Gate Memorial as a symbol of remembrance and hope.
