Teams of firemen fighting to save St Godrics Roman Catholic Church in Durham City from being engulfed by flames. The blaze was spotted when smoke was seen pouring from the tower of the church. Within minutes the whole roof was ablaze. Six fire appliances, including a turntable ladder, converged on the hilltop site in the centre of Durham. Men wearing breathing apparatus battled through dense smoke and fumes in an attempt to find the seat of the fire. 13th January 1985. © Mirrorpix
